Diya Aur Baati Hum Storyline
Set on the backdrop of Pushkar, Diya Aur Bati Hum is all about breaking the stereotypical image of women in rural India by presenting the inspiring journey of Ambitious and educated Sandhya Kothari, whose dreams and aspirations of becoming an IPS officer were destroyed as she lost her parents in a terrorist attack.
Story:
Ankur, her brother, who was planning to move abroad, lied about Sandhya’s qualifications and fixed her marriage with Sooraj, whose strict mother, Santosh wanted her daughter-in-law to be simple and not well educated but should have outstanding skills of a housewife. Soon, Santosh banished Sandhya as she got to know about her education and her not so good cooking skills.
Sooraj took a stand for Sandhya and taught her everything that she must know to be a perfect daughter in law. Sandhya started having feelings for Sooraj and helped him in many circumstances including an international confection competition in Singapore. Sooraj also helped Sandhya to complete her studies and influenced Santosh to let Sandhya fulfil her dreams of becoming a Police Officer. Sandhya fought with various criminals, which includes terrorist leader Raj Kumar while fulfilling family responsibilities. Amidst all this, Sandhya donated one of her kidneys to Santosh battling for life, which was unknown to the family.
Ankur’s daughter Bulbul eagerly wanted a sibling, but unfortunately, his wife Ankita faced a miscarriage and could not conceive again. On the other side, Sandhya and Sooraj were expecting twins and decided to give one of their twins to Ankita on Bulbul’s demand. Later in the story, everyone got to know that Sandhya is Santosh’s kidney donor. Sandhya delivered twin sons, Ved and Vansh, but infants were kidnapped to be sold. While they were trying to save the kids, Ved was safe and Vansh expired breaking everyone.
Seven Years Later
While Sandhya and Sooraj were happily staying with Ved, the Rathis got to know that Vansh never died; but was nurtured by Ankur and Ankita, who planned the whole kidnapping disaster. Sandhya broke her relation with Ankur and Ankita, but let them keep her child for the sake of Vansh’s happiness.
Sooraj and Sandhya started working towards Sooraj’s dream of opening a big hotel, but she got appointed for an important mission called, Mahabali. This mission was meant to track threatening terrorist and defeat him in his own state in West Bengal, where she has to fake her identity as Sagarika. However, Sandhya left and proclaimed her death in a train accident. Sooraj lost all his dreams and mental stability due to Sandhya’s death and was not ready to believe it.
Santosh started blaming Sandhya for Sooraj’s condition and wanted him to marry Laalima Aggarwal. On the other hand, Sandhya was battling with the difficulties of Mahabhali and ultimately manages to disrupt their plan, but her identity was exposed. The terrorists seized her and almost tortured her to death.
Soon, Sooraj got to know that Sandhya is alive and joined her along on the mission to help Sandhya. They returned home after completing the mission, but Santosh refused to forgive Sandhya. Sandhya faced a hard competition with Laalima, but Sooraj and Sandhya’s love won and Santosh forgave her. Sooraj’s youngest brother, Mohit was shot to death as he molested Laalima, but with the help of women’s rights activists, Sandhya bailed her out.
Santosh used to hate Pakistan due to the tragic accident on the border that took her younger brother’s life when they were kids. Unaware about Arzoo belonged to Pakistan; Santosh fixed her marriage with Aryan, Initially, Sandhya suspected Arzoo of being a terrorist. Later, Sandhya not only saved Arzoo from the horrible misunderstanding but also get her accepted by Santosh.
A Few days later, Sooraj met with an accident and got stuck in a wheelchair. Sandhya decided to look after the confectionary shop by leaving her job. Later, Sandhya delivered a daughter named, Kanak and now Sooraj was getting better and was able to walk to run his shop.
Sandhya got a proposal from the commissioner to join the police force again. She agreed to join it. Before meeting IPS Arpita Khanna, who considered Sandhya as her competitor at first but later they became best friends.
Soon, Vansh got to know the truth about his real parents, but hated them giving him away. Ankur and Ankita were killed by four terrorists and also took the Rathi’s neighbourhood residents. However, Sandhya and Sooraj bravely released the civilians. After seeing his selfless and courageous parents, Vansh forgave them and the family was reunited. While all of them were living happily, Sandhya and Sooraj tried a trap for the terrorists but were unsuccessful. The leader kidnapped Kanak and made Sandhya and Sooraj eat bomb pills.
Sandhya and Sooraj gave their farewell to the family and others by jumping into the river before blasting. Sandhya’s mangal sutra and Sooraj’s chain was entangled in the water before the sunset, conveying that even death cannot separate Sandhya and Sooraj.
